Root Canals
What is a Root Canal?
The purpose of a root canal is to remove the necrotic (or dead) nerve, blood vessels, and bacteria in the pulp of the tooth with the goal of saving the tooth. In most cases, root canals are effective for saving badly infected and severely broken teeth, although there are instances when the tooth is not salvageable. Even so, a root canal almost always alleviates pain and remedies the problem.
Why Have a Root Canal?
Symptoms of tooth decay or infection include severe tooth pain when chewing and prolonged sensitivity to heat and cold. The pain is often unbearable until the problem is properly addressed. Sometimes decay reaches the tooth’s nerve system, or gets close enough to create uncomfortable sensitivity. Without this procedure the nerve can break down and bacteria will multiply causing an infection known as an abscess.
What are Your Options?
There are two treatment options:
- Removal of the nerve (known as a ‘root canal’)
- Pulp capping (which attempts to keep the nerve alive)
What Should You Expect?
For a root canal, your dentist will start with a local anesthetic to numb the area. After removal of the nerve and pulp, the canal is cleaned and filled with a rubber compound and sealer paste. The tooth is sealed with a filling and, if necessary, can be prepped for a crown. A tooth’s nerve is not vitally important to a tooth’s health and function after it has emerged through the gums. It’s only function is sensory – hot/cold. The absence of the nerve will not affect its day-to-day functioning, so the procedure is a great way to preserve the tooth.

Reviews
Got all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed by the amazing Dr. Verratti and it was honestly the best dental experience of my life. She and her team are amazing and so patient. I felt zero pain during and very little pain in the recovery process. I’ve been referring everyone to her because it was that great of an experience. The office is clean, everyone is professional and polite. 10/10 if you have to see an oral surgeon she’s the one to go to. She takes her time and answers all your questions. I never felt rushed and always was heard when I had any concerns or uncertainties.
Everyone is very polite, professional & helpful. Highly recommend.
